The thorough beating MFM FC got in Algiers against Mouloudia Club D’algers (MC Algers) in the CAF Champions League sums up the Olukoya Boys poor preparation ahead of a tough task on the continent.
The Lagos outfit lost 6-0 to Mouloudia after they managed a 2-1 win in the first leg at the Agege stadium. The goals rain started with less than 2 minutes in to the match and 30 minutes later The Dean were four goals up courtesy Sofiane Bendebka, Walid Derreja, Hichem Nekkache and Amir Karaoui. While MFM fans were busy praying for a miraculous come back in the second half, two more goals were scored to mirror the odds set before the match at 1.19- 13.00.
It was obvious that MFM’s brilliant performance from 2017 will only continue if they manage the team that finished second in the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League season well.
The trio of Onuwa Chukwuka, Olatunbosun Sikiru and Stephen Odey had some great understanding that produced some wow moment and lots of goals last season, the midfield looked strong with the presence of Shola Brossa and Oladele Oshobe while the continued back-up from Austine Ogunye and Waheed Adebayo upfront came in handy.
MFM’s coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu had a huge task to secure proper replacement for Stephen Odey, Oladele Oshobe and Austine Ogunye who left the club but as it were, former Spartans FC striker, Nojeem Akinyemi who showed some encouraging signs in the 2017 Lagos FA Cup was signed , Elijah Akanni was promoted from the junior team while Lawal Abayomi joined from Smart City FC.
With these new arrivals, it was obvious MFM will struggle in 2018. What would have looked like a good signing slipped off the grip of the Lagos base team; the management of the club couldn’t tie up a deal for the the duo of Remo Stars’ Victor Mbaoma and Ochowechi Salefu who would have brought a lot upfront.
Players Registration for CAF Champions League
In what looked more like administrative lapses, Sikiru Olatunbosun whose speed and creativity from the wings could wreck defenders wasn’t registered, Waheed Adebayo and Jesse Akila who can play as a center forward or from the wings were also left out of the continental battle. It got even worse – Shola Brossa whose presence in front of the defenders brings solidity wasn’t registered.
Though MFM FC still has one last chance in 2018 to lay hold of a spot in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup but not until they sail though the playoffs.
